Railway station Ljubljana

The new railway station is a unique building designed as a bridge over the existing railway tracks - steel above steel. The facility is, due to its content, an important spatial element located between the existing historic railway station built in 1849, the new bus station and a new shopping centre which will be constructed all at the same time. The building program is comprised of public facilities related to the operation of the station and the technical and administrative facilities, necessary for the functioning of the entire complex.

Steel production has enabled the development of the railway and consequently an industrial revolution. In Slovenian language, railway in direct translation means “iron road”. Usage of steel elements like tracks, bolts, sleepers, and other prefabricated elements is embedded in the railway itself. Because of its technical characteristics, prefabrication nature and sustainability, we deliberately decided that steel is the optimal building material for the Ljubljana railway station design, enabling big spans of the construction itself and logical prefabricated building technology allowing us to organize the building site above the tracks. Steel defines the railway in its essence.

The construction is defined by 4 main steel trusses with 61 and 51 m spans, providing an optimal structural concept and building technology to overcome issues coming out of the site and existing program. Steel construction is supported by concrete columns on a piling system. With the urban public program, the structure becomes a building.

The new train station hovers above the platforms, withdrawn from the existing Austro-Hungarian building, which will after its implementation retain its symbolic function of the entrance building with a characteristic tower clock. The new building is using typical railway bridge elements for functional and architectural purposes.
Repetition of the sun louvers, transparency of the facade and movements of the trains defines the building.

The main hall is a naturally ventilated area protected from the environments basic elements by an external envelope. Within the envelope there is another box - building with a thermo-insulative facade, heating, cooling and ventilation system, further protecting program units from external elements.

The train station will function as a program-connection element above the tracks as well as an urbanistic city connection between the old city centre south of the tracks and the residential area to the north.
