RAILWAY TUNNEL KARAVANKE

The Karavanke railway tunnel was built between 1900 and 1906. The railway played a special strategic role during construction. The facilities were unified, standardized, and at the same time carefully designed. After more than a hundred years of use and in some cases abuse, the quality of these facilities is still present and recognizable.Over 100 years after its construction, the tunnel is planned to be renovated.

The Slovene architecture is characterized by a recognizable tradition of infrastructural buildings to the present day. from Austro-Hungarian unification through the functionalism of Savin Sever's architecture to the present day. The architectures of these buildings are important due to the continuity and recognizability of the Slovene architectural landscape.

With renovation of the tunnel, the portal area will be renovated as well. New infrastructure with power central – building, will be located next to the existing portal. The building is designed in minimalist manner, respectful to the existing spatial hierarchy. The architecture derives from the function of the building and summarizes the basic principles of railway, compatibility, unification, repetition.
